Abiding: The Secret to True Communion & Victory

Scripture Focus:
“Inside the Tent of Meeting, the Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend. Afterward Moses would return to the camp, but the young man who assisted him, Joshua son of Nun, would remain behind in the Tent of Meeting. — Exodus 33:11 (NLT).

“Remain in me, and I will remain in you… Apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:4-5 (NLT)

True communion is not a forced or fleeting moment; it is not a one-sided interaction or exchange. It is a lifestyle of fellowship that encourages one to remain in God’s divine presence.

Although many of the Israelites struggled to disconnect from the ways of Egypt, Joshua learned a quiet secret from observing Moses: intimacy with God requires staying behind when everyone else walks away. Before Joshua ever led an army, he learned to linger in the sanctuary. Abiding in God’s presence became the anchor that protected him from disobedience and rebellion.

From Watching Devotion to Personal Encounter
Encountering God deeply often begins by witnessing another person’s passion, but it cannot end there. Joshua watched Moses speak with God face-to-face like a friend, and it ignited a hunger within his own soul. Joshua did not just pack up and leave when the official meeting ended; he lingered in the Tent of Meeting. Because he made lingering his routine, Joshua enjoyed more than just fellowship with God. He received wisdom and courage to face the years ahead beginning with a boldness to require Israel to rededicate themselves to the Lord as they stood on the banks of Jordan near Jericho in Joshua chapters 5 & 6. When the Commander of the Lord’s army appeared, Joshua instantly recognized holy ground, removed his sandals, and surrendered. His quiet routine of abiding in secret laid the foundation for his public victories.

The same Commander of the Lord’s army challenges us (His followers) to seek after this holy communion and fellowship. Jesus says “…abide in me (because) apart from me you can do nothing.” He later added that whatever we request will be given because of the holy union that is established (John 15:4-7).

Thought for the Day
Victories in life are not won on the battlefield; they are won in the Tent of Meeting. When we make abiding our quiet routine, God makes His holy presence our daily strength.

Closing Prayer
Lord, forgive me for the times I have rushed out of Your presence. Teach me the secret of abiding. Give me a heart that lingers in Your word, abides in Your love, and surrenders willingly to Your holy presence. May my vertical devotion to You refine my horizontal walk with others today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Blessings,
