Going Before His Face

Scripture Focus
“After this the Lord appointed seventy two others and sent them ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where He himself was about to go.” (Luke 10:1, ESV)

Heralds of the King
In biblical times, heralds went ahead of royalty to announce their arrival or proclaim a decree. John the Baptist stands as the ultimate example of a herald: one who pointed to Christ in two profound ways:
  • As the Gentle Sacrifice: “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29)
  • As the Righteous Judge: “His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly cleanse His threshing floor.” (Matthew 3:12)

Heralds carried a form of diplomatic immunity. Even on enemy territory, harming the king’s messenger brought severe consequences. Jesus Himself defended John’s ministry, asking the crowds, “What did you go out into the wilderness to see?” He challenged their criticism, honored John as the greatest prophet, and withdrew to mourn when John was killed. This is the dignity and weight of the calling Jesus places on His messengers.

The Mixed Response of the World
As we carry Christ’s message into our workplaces, neighborhoods, and the modern marketplace, we must remember that the world’s response will always be mixed. Some will welcome the Word with joy; others will resist it. But resistance does not change our commission. Our voices must remain steady, proclaiming both the joy of salvation and the reality of eternity. As a church family spanning every generation, our charge remains simple and Christlike: We are called to love people even when they resist the gospel.

Proclaiming the Whole Message
Let’s celebrate the beauty of Christ’s saving work, echoing the songwriters of old:
  • “We have heard the joyful sound: Jesus saves! Jesus saves!”
  • “Oh, the love that drew salvation’s plan! Oh, the grace that brought it down to man!”

A reminder: our message does not always end with comfort alone. A true herald must declare the WHOLE counsel of God sometimes asking the hard questions “…will you be ready when Jesus comes?” With love and tenderness, we urge every soul to prepare their garments for the Marriage Supper of the Lamb.

Protected as We Go
As stated earlier, heralds carry diplomatic immunity. As believers we carry a spiritual form of diplomatic immunity. In Luke 10, Jesus sends His disciples ahead of Him with clear instructions: not to over plan, not to fear, and not to shrink back. The One who sends us also protects and provides for us. Where He is about to go, He sends us first; when He sends us, He goes with us. Let’s go before His face, announcing His reign and His truth. Jesus—coming to thJe city where we are because we are already there!
