The Final Frontier

The Sci-Fi show Star Trek used to start with the line, “Space…The Final Frontier…”

While we do think of space being infinite and sometimes unfathomable, what if I told you that we know almost just as little about the ocean depths than we know about outer space? Truly an example of “so close and yet so far”. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), in addition to the ocean covering 70% of Earth’s surface, there is more life there than anywhere else on Earth. In addition, with all our technological capabilities, the more conservative estimates say that we have only explored about 5% of the entire ocean. There are creatures that we have never seen, species we don’t even know exist. It’s honestly mind-boggling considering how much we DO know about the ocean that there so much left to explore. Every time I get to go to the beach, I can’t help but be in awe as I look out on the vastness of the ocean.

God has revealed so much of Himself to us. The Scriptures reveal Him as Creator, as Father, and as Redeemer. It describes His love, His grace, His justice, and His holiness to name just a few aspects. Most of all, we have a front row seat to God made flesh in the person of Jesus Christ. However, may it never be said of us, His people, that we have lost the awe of the triune God. He is still the one who lives in “unapproachable light” as Paul describes in 1 Timothy 6:15-16. One of my favorite passages when I need to refresh my awe of who God is, is found in Job 26. The entire chapter goes into detail describing various attributes of God and things He has done and after all of that in-depth description of God, Job concludes with the following in verse 14: “Indeed these are the mere edges of His ways,
And how small a whisper we hear of Him!

But the thunder of His power, who can understand?”

What if like the ocean, even with all we know of God, all we have seen are the just the edges, or as another version says, “the outskirts” of His ways? Could it be that all we have “heard” is merely the whisper of all God has to offer us and all that He is? Is that not awe-inspiring? What a mighty God we serve! He is truly bigger than our imagination! We may never see all the mysteries the ocean has hidden in its depths. However, God continues to reveal Himself to us and we have the certainty that one day in heaven, He will not have to hold anything back and we will be able to see Him in all His glory. Paul said it best in 1 Corinthians 13:12 NIV “For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror, but then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.” BOH, never lose the awe of God, and if you feel like it’s happening, dive into the Word of God and let His word refresh your realization and understanding of how magnificent He is. There is so much more of Him to explore!

In Christ,
Pastor Javier
