Why Me?
FOCUS SCRIPTURE
'As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” '
- John 9:1-5
PERSONAL BACKGROUND
Growing up, I was different. Some would say I was a little weird. I was smart. I wasn’t the most athletic. I was blind as a bat (I needed those Steve Urkel coke bottle glasses). I was a gamer but not the best. I was polite and respectful. Needless to say, I was never a part of the “in” crowd. I also dealt with depression (which I didn’t have a name for when I was younger, of course). That meant I would wake up one random morning and just not be “feeling it”. I would spend most of the day in a funk and was pretty much to myself.
I can recall having moments where I would ask the simple question: “Why me?!” I wondered if I was broken in some way. Maybe I’m not from here. Maybe my parents adopted me. Whenever something bad happened, I wondered if it was tied to something I had done. Is this God’s way of punishing me?
“WHY?” to “HOW?”
Have you ever felt that way? In our scripture, the disciples immediately had questions when they came across the man who had been blind from birth. Was it he who sinned? Was it his parents? This was a common misconception at the time when it came to diseases and such. I’m sure the blind man had the same questions. Turns out, neither was the culprit. God would get the glory in this moment. This is not to say that God caused the blindness. That would attack who God is as a Father who cares for his children. But what it does show is that God can take lemons and make some of the best lemonade you can fathom!
We may never know the “why” to many of life’s questions. Most of us don’t know why we even go to work most days, but here we go. But in those “why” moments, it's important to trust in God, who can turn our “Why?” into a “How?!”. How were they able to accomplish that? They came from such humble beginnings. How has this person survived so long with this disease? Most people never make it. We must trust in the God of all humanity, relying on Him even when we don’t know all the answers, because He can still get the glory if I stop trying to fix it on my own.
FINAL THOUGHT
This is not a call to laziness. This is a call to faith that will seem crazy to others. People won’t understand your journey and, if I’m honest, this road can be lonely. But one thing continuously rings true – God has replaced my “Why?” with a “How?”
How GREAT is our God? It’s not a question…it’s more like a brag.
